His Eye Is On The Sparrow

"Look at the birds in the sky! They don't plant or harvest. They don't even store grain in barns. Yet your Father in heaven takes care of them. Aren't you worth more than birds?" - Matthew 6:26

As I sit at my parent's breakfast table this morning, I can't help but think of the hymn "His Eye Is On The Sparrow." I griped nearly every day last week about the cold rain that we were getting here for what seemed like eight or nine days without any sunshine. It turned my parent's backyard into a bit of a muddy mess around their patio and prompted my dad to go and buy some straw to spread around to help cut down on the mud tracked in by the dogs.

I watch this morning as bird after bird flies down into that straw and picks out the seeds and flies away. A male and female cardinal, doves, wrens even a blue jay and an old crow have come down to eat breakfast with me. It is a clear reminder that not only is God taking care of his smallest creatures but He will take care of me and all of us too.

If it had not rained so much, there would not have been the need to put the straw down. Without the straw, I would not have gotten the encouragement I got this morning in this hard time for me. God is taking good care of me through this difficult time. He's keeping his arms wrapped around me and working in me to help me overcome losing Leah. He knew I needed a boost this morning going through the holiday and He delivered for me.

My prayer is for everyone to have a Merry Christmas and try to take a minute to slow down, look for the small things going on around you that you might miss and remember the real meaning of Christmas. Also take an extra minute and get an extra hug from that loved one because you never know if they will be here next Christmas or not.

Why should I feel discouraged?
Why should the shaddows come?
Why should my heart be lonely
and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant friend is he:
His eye is on the sparrow,
and I know he watches me.

I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
for his eye is on the sparrow,
and I know he watches me.
